Job Summary:

The Circulating and Scrub Registered Nurse (RN) provides safe, evidence-based perioperative nursing care to surgical patients in a rural hospital setting. This role involves coordinating patient care during preoperative, intraoperative, and immediate postoperative phases, maintaining sterile environments, assisting surgeons, and collaborating with the perioperative team. The nurse demonstrates proficiency across multiple surgical specialties, supports emergency procedures, and contributes to quality improvement and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities:

• Provide safe, evidence-based nursing care throughout preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases.
• Function as circulating nurse by coordinating patient care, maintaining sterile environment, documenting procedures, and advocating for patient safety.
• Function as scrub nurse by preparing instruments and supplies, maintaining sterile field, anticipating surgeon needs, passing instruments and medications, and maintaining accurate counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments.
• Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical technologists, and other perioperative team members.
• Demonstrate proficiency in multiple surgical specialties including general surgery, hand surgery, gynecology, obstetrics, ophthalmology, podiatry, ENT, endoscopy, and other specialty procedures.
• Take call exclusively for c-sections and participate in emergency and trauma procedures as required.
• Assist with inventory management, equipment troubleshooting, quality improvement initiatives, regulatory compliance, and orientation of new staff.
• Adapt flexibly to fluctuating surgical volumes, staffing needs, and expanded responsibilities common in rural healthcare environments.
• Promote a culture of patient safety, teamwork, professionalism, and continuous learning while maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to organizational policies and standards.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Demonstrated competency in both circulating and scrub nurse roles.
• Experience in a rural healthcare setting.
• Travel nursing experience.
• Epic electronic health record experience.
• Ability to perform c-sections, hand cases, podiatry, and cataract surgeries.
• ND or compact nursing license with no restrictions.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
• Additional perioperative specialty training or certifications.

Special Considerations:

• On-call responsibilities limited to c-sections.
• Work environment includes rural hospital with fluctuating surgical volumes and staffing needs.
• Participation in emergency and trauma procedures as needed.

Scheduling:

• Shift assignments and schedules may vary to accommodate surgical volume and staffing requirements.
• Flexibility required to cover call for c-sections and emergency cases.
